Notes for Dicie Johnston:
OBITUARY: 12/26/1999; p.29D Daily Oklahoman
GRIFFY Dicie (Johnston), was born in Waldron, Arkansas on March 13, 1899. She died in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on December 23, 1999. Dicie married Judson Harmon Griffy, who died in 1976, in Little Rock, Arkansas. She is survived by five children. The next generation consists of ten grandchildren, all of whom are married; eleven great grandchildren, four of whom are married; and seven great great-grandchildren. Consequently, she was the matriarch of a clan that numbers 50 living members. Dicie did much more than simply bring these people into the world. She has also served as a role model to members of her family, showing how one could live a full and fruitful life incorporating the virtues of honesty, compassion and love. The task was not always easy. Her first three children grew up during the depression years in the 1930's. She then hung the blue star in the window as her son and two sons-in-law left to serve in World War Ii. She attended countless PTA meetings as well as numerous band concerts, school plays and athletic events to lend support to her children and grandchildren. Although raised as a Baptist, she later joined the Methodist Church. Religious beliefs did much to shape her life. She was a member of circles and Sunday school classes. She not only read the Bible, she understood, better than most biblical scholars, how to use the wisdom contained in this book to live a full and unselfish life. Simply put, she loved the Lord. Dicie saw the world change. She remembered using a match to light the headlights of the first car her father owned. She was born before the invention of the airplane. Her first plane ride was in an open-cockpit biplane piloted by her brother. She was a mother of three children when she heard her first radio broadcast. She was already a grandmother when she saw her first television. She was a great grandmother when she broke her ankle climbing down out of the cab of an eighteen wheeler. Her legacy is to be found in the family and friends she leaves behind, those whose lives she changed. We are all richer for having known and loved her. The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice and the staff of Bellevue Nursing Center for the loving care they provided Dicie during the last year of her life. A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM Monday, December 27, 1999 at the Hahn-Cook/ Street & Draper Chapel.
