Prior to this century, this grave had only a brass marker placed by the Association in the 1930s. The name on the marker was Colson. Using the Association archives and contact with the Colson family more details were learned about the grave. A new marker with the proper information was placed by the Association in 2014.

Notes for Henry James Colson:
Born Aug.5,1867 Lee Co, VA. Mother died when he was seven & his father when he was eight. He did not want to live with his stepmother or go with the relatives that would take him so in 1875 he set off by foot on his own. With only barefoot and the clothes on his back, started out not eating for two days, and a black man took him in, let him sleep on some hay bails, & fed him turnips. This made him very sick into the night so He took off in the dark to continue his journey. Many kind hearted people helped the boy as he would work on farms for food & shelter. He had one Brother named Bill and two sisters Janie and Lanie, the girls went with family, & every few years he did keep in contact with them. He met a man who was into buying land (homesteading) and this was where he acquired the knowledge of homesteading land. He had virtually no education, but a mind for making money, so he became a land runner during the big land rush ......on April 22 1889 he went to Guthrie, Oklahoma during the land rush and settled for a short time. Then traded his farm for a herd of Mustang horses and moved to Sherman. About 1895 he returned to Richmond, KY. where he married Elizabeth Foster and had 12 children. His brother Bill was the last to die of the 4 children in 1959. Mary Neal Routzohn or (Routjohn) wrote two books on the Colsons family members that included a big family feud the "Colson Clan" had with another family over land. Henry J. died July 5,1924. The western union telegram Harry sent to Mrs. Minnie Mobley in Winding Oregon states: "Father burned to death-funeral Saturday-body not in condition-to see dont come. He was burned to death when his home caught fire in his sleep.
