- Luther Farmer's Last Rites Slated
- Services for William John Arthur, 76, retired Luther farmer and pioneer state resident
will be at 2:30; p.m. Sunday in the Luther high school auditorium. Burial will be in the
Luther cemetery under the direction of the Baggerley funeral home of
Edmond. Arthur died Friday at his home. He had lived in Luther the past 48 years. Born in
Texarkana, Ark., Dec 14 1881 he came with his parents to Oklahoma in 1889 and they
homesteaded a farm a mile north of Lake Hefner. Arthur had for years been a participant in Oklahoma State Fair competition, entering
from 1907 until 1956 when his health failed. Often a blue ribbon winner with his con
exhibits here, he also won three national championships. Survivors include his wife, Bertha, of the home; a son, W. R. Arthur, Luther; a
daughter, Mrs. Ethel Vogel, 4328 Woods drive, five grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.

- Mrs. Bertha Rose Arthur, 88, Luther, died Friday in an Edmond nursing home after a long
illness. Services will be at 2; p.m. Monday in Luther United Methodist Church will burial
in Rose Hill Cemetery directed by Baggerly Funeral Home, Edmond. Mrs. Arthur was born in Denton, Iowa, and move to Alex in 1889 and to Luther in 1912
from Edmond. She was a member of Luther United Methodist Church and Luther Farm Women's
Club. She is survived by a son, W. R., Luther; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Hargis, 2704 NW 22
and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Moore 3812 NW 26 and Mrs. Grace Sloan, Edmond.

- Services for Howard Frances Couch, 58, Gainesville, Texas, a former Oklahoma City
resident, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Gainesville First Christian Church. Couch died Tuesday at a Veterans Hospital, Dallas. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Luther Cemetery. Couch was a grandson of William L. Couch, early pioneer of Oklahoma City. He was born in
Luther and attended the University of Oklahoma, and served as artillery colonel in the U.
S. Army during World War Ii. Couch moved to Gainesville from Oklahoma City in 1947. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of the home; his mother
Mrs. A. C. Couch 2529 NW 29; two sons.; a sister, Mrs. Everett Johns, 2529 NW 29 and a brother, William 4117 NW 62.

- ARTHUR Mary Jane Gray, of Luther, age 76, was born August 24, 1916 in Scranton,

died Oct. 12, 1992 after an extended battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her
parents; two brothers and one sister. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, W.R.
Arthur, Sr.; two daughters; and a son; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She owned Country Inn Cafe in Luther for 25 years and was a member of the First Christian
Church of Luther. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 1992 at First Christian
Church in Luther with interment in Luther Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to
Mercy Hospice, 4200 W. Memorial Rd., Oklahoma City, OK.

- WILLIAM JOHN ARTHUR
- William John Arthur, 89-year-old retired cotton grower, who came to Oklahoma in the run
of 1889, died Tuesday night at his home 1308 Northeastern Fourteenth
street. Arthur withdrew from active business about 12 years ago but was well known in Oklahoma
City and Edmond. He was one of the first homesteaders in Britton, where he started a
successful cotton trade. Since his wife's death here in January 1930, Arthur lived at his home. He was born in
Philadelphia, Jan. 10, 1848 and served terms in both the army and
navy. The Baggerly and Couch funeral home, Edmond, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Arthur died Tuesday morning. She is survived by the widower, two sons, E. S. and W. J. Arthur at
Luther, and a daughter, Mrs. Anna West, Edmond.

- Edwin S. Arthur, 73, of Luther, who operated a cotton gin and mill in Luther for 40
years, died Wednesday night in the Edmond hospital after a brief illness. Born in Texas, Arthur moved in 1889 to a farm west of Edmond with his father who
homesteaded on the land. Arthur had lived in Luther 47 years. He sold the gin and mill several years go. A member of the Christian church, he was a
collector of guns. Survivors are his wife, Ida Jane; two daughters,, and a brother, W. J. Arthur, Luther. Services will be announced by Baggerly funeral home, Edmond.

- Mrs. Annie Arthur West, 62, Edmond, died Sunday morning at Oklahoma City General
hospital following a three-year illness. Prior to her illness, Mrs. West was very active in exhibiting of grains and produce
grown on her farm near Edmond. In 1940 she won first prize in sorghum grains with her
exhibit at the international grain exposition at Chicago. She won numerous state and
county awards. Survivors include two sons. She is also survived by a daughter, and two brothers, Edwin
S. Arthur and W. J. Arthur Jr., both of Luther. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Hahn funeral home and interment will be in
Rose Hill cemetery.
