ARTHUR WINNIE "WINK" CARSON (12 Dec 1875 - 14 Dec 1944)
and his wife
MARY HASLEY CARSON (03 Jan 1881 - 30 Nov 1900)
OBITUARY: 12 December 1944

In the passing of "Wink" Carson Oklahoma has once more lost another link in her chain of pioneer traditions of early days.; He came of a family of adventurous pioneers always looking for new frontiers until the course of events finally led to Oklahoma.

He was born in Jackson county, Kansas on Dec. 23, 1875 near what is now the town of Hoyt and was the eighth child of the union of Joseph Pine Carson and Helen Esther Bailey. His family moved to Pratt county, Kansas about 1885 where they resided until the opening of Oklahoma Territory in 1889 hen his father took up a homestead six miles west and on-half mile north of Britton where "wink" grew to manhood and resided until about 1909. From then until 1919 he traveled about from Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, Pacific Coast and Northwestern Canada often returning to "home" in Oklahoma.

He was married to Mary Celia Hasley of Britton on January 19, 1900 but suffered the loss by death of his wife on November 30, 1900.

He was later married on Feb 21, 1927 to Florence Smith of Britton and they have resided in Norman, Oklahoma since 1929 where his death occurred on Dec 14, 1944.

In Wink Carson was strongly developed the pioneer spirit of friendliness and helpfulness to family, neighbors, and even strangers in need of any assistance, and he has ever been surrounded by a large circle of friends. While never attaining great material success he has by his kindliness, patience, good humor, generosity and unaffected friendliness won a place in the affections of a host of people who will always remember him as a trusted friend and neighbor.

He found 160 acres seven miles west and one mile north of Britton (what is now NW 108th street and County Line - legal description SW1/4 of SEC 19-13N-4W., Spring Creek Twp, Oklahoma Co, Oklahoma). Rufus built the largest and nicest house the community had seen up to that time. He moved his wife and six children from Hoyt in March 1894. By 1900 three more children were born. Like all pioneer families their days were filled with long hours of hard work. They endured many hardships; cyclone (1912), drought, wind, and hail. Elizabeth McKeage Bailey was a school teacher before marriage, educated at a college in Holton, KS. Family evenings would include readings by Rufus and were eagerly anticipated by all the children. They all developed a great love of reading. Elizabeth and Rufus retired from farming December 31 1922 and moved to a home in Britton, where they lived out the remainder of their lives.
