Obituary

This SPENCER family is a mystery. Nothing is certain about the man in this unmarked grave except that the his name was JOHN SPENCER (grandpa) and he was probably buried in the late 1890s.

He's most likely the father of Harvey Spencer who was a neighbor of Rufus Bailey. John was born in VA about 1822, he married Margaret Nickell in 1844 in Ohio. He and Harvey and another son Charles came from Page Co, IA and made the 1889 run. Harvey's daughter Mamie was the wife of state appeals court Judge Bert B. Barefoot (b.1879 - d.1949).

Most of the unmarked graves were marked with brass plates by the Cemetery Association in 1934. Mr. Spencer's brass plate has been damaged by the mowers.
