Generation 3
14. John Green Clark is the son of William Clark & Sophia W.
Dawson [33, 34, 35, 11]. He was born Abt. 1823 in Trigg Co, KY
[36]. He died on 19 Apr 1891 in Henry Co, TN [36]. Occupation in
Farmer. Burial in Maple Grove Cemetery, Henry Co, TN.
Notes for John Green Clark:
From "The Family
and Descendants of William and Sophia Clark Dawson" by J. Algene
Steele:
- • Information for John Green and Mary Ann Stagner Clark's
children comes from TN Census 1850, 1860, and 1870. They
moved to TN with Mary Ann's parents in the 1840's and
lived near them in Henry Co, TN, at least through 1870. The 1870
Census adds the children Alice, Harriet, James and Julia. It is
assumed that James and Julia are twins as their ages are so
close. Additionally, the 1870 census notes the presence of Julia
Cummings, b. ca 1805 (Va.), a black cook, and Silas Erwin, b. ca
1792 (NC).
- • The 1880 Census lists John R., Andrew T., Barbery A.,
Josephine M., James L. and Julia B. (noted as twins), and Wesley
A. As Wesley is 8 years old in 1880 it is presumed that there
were not any other children born to this family. Leonard is
married and living nearby. Amanda must be married also. John
Green Clark died of throat cancer.
From the notes of Johnny D. Walker:
It was after 1847 that the John Green Clark family moved to
Henry Co, TN, from Trigg Co, KY. John G. Clark married Mary Ann
Stagner on 25 Jul 1842 in Trigg Co. John's middle name was Green
according to Huey Osborn, grandson of John Robert Clark. The
John G. Clark family has been located in the census returns of
Henry Co, TN, as follows: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880. From these
census returns it is known that John G. Clark was born about
1823 in KY. The death dates for John G. Clark and his wife
were provided from family papers in the possession of Garlon
Clark, grandson of John Robert Clark. According to older family
member, John G. Clark died of throat cancer, which was verified
in a brief report of his death in a Paris, TN newspaper.
The identity of the parents of John Green Clark has not yet
been determined by direct evidence. However, there are several
reasons for believing that his parents were William Clark and
Sophia Dawson Clark of Trigg Co, KY.
- • Sophia Dawson Clark had a brother named Greenup Dawson
proven by the will of their father, John Dawson, who died in 1834
in Trigg Co, KY. Thus John Green Clark could have been
named from his maternal grandfather and maternal uncle (if Green
can be considered a shortened form of Greenup).
- • John G. Clark's oldest son was named William, probably thus
preserving the name of John G. Clark's father.
- • In the 1880 census there are
columns indicating the place of birth of the parents of
each person. It is there indicated that John G. Clark's
father was born in Virginia and his mother was born in
KY. The 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses listing of
William and Sophia Clark of Trigg Co consistently
list their places of birth as Virginia and KY.
- For these reasons it is believed that William and Sophia were the parents of John G. Clark who moved to Henry
Co, TN.
15. Mary Ann Stagner is the daughter of Talbert Stagner &
Malinda Mathis [33, 34, 35, 11]. She was born Abt. 1829 in Trigg
Co, KY [36]. She died on 06 Jul 1889 in Henry Co, TN [36].
Occupation in Housewife. Buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Henry
Co, TN.
John Green Clark & Mary Ann Stagner. They were married on 25
Jul 1842 in Trigg Co, KY. They had 11 children.
i. Amanda P. Clark [33, 34]. She was born Abt. 1847 in Henry
Co, TN. She died Bet. 1860–1870 in Henry Co, TN.
Notes for Amanda P. Clark:
Amanda P. Clark was said to have gone blind and
probably died as a young woman. She was in her father's
household in the 1850 and 1860 census records but
doesn't show up again after 1860. There is a record in
Weakley Co, TN, for the marriage of George Bradberry
to Amanda Clark, issued 22 May 1867, no return. It is not known
if this could be the same Amanda Clark or not. A check of the
1870 census of Weakley Co, Tenn. did not reveal any Amanda
Bradberry. In the 1880 census of Weakley Co, TN in
District 7 there was a household headed by William C. Bradberry
with a wife named Amanda C. who was aged 25 years or born about
1855. A check of Weakley Co, Tenn. marriage records revealed
the marriage of W. G. Bradberry to A. C. Autrey on 21 Mar 1878.
So this Amanda could not be Amanda P. Clark of Henry Co, TN
ii. William Talbert Clark [33, 34, 35, 37, 38, 13]. He was
born on 14 Feb 1848 in Trigg Co, KY. He married Melissa Jane
Spencer. They were married on 16 Aug 1866 in Henry Co, TN. He
died on 04 Mar 1908 in Henry Co, TN. AKA: Buddy.
Burial in Shady Grove Baptist Church, Henry Co, TN.
Notes for William Talbert Clark:
William
Talbert Clark and Melissa Jane Spencer separated after the birth
of the youngest child, Claude Claymon Clark. The father stole
the boy Claude when he was about age 2 (circa 1887).
iii. Joseph Clark [33]. He died Bet. 1850–1860 in Henry Co,
TN. He was born Feb 1850 in Henry Co, TN.
iv. John Robert Clark [34, 35, 11, 39, 40, 41, 42]. He was
born on 23 Jan 1852 in Henry Co, TN. He married Julia Catherine

Notes for William J. Clark:
From "The Family
and Descendants of William and Sophia Dawson Clark":
- Dick Clark is supposed to be Andrew Jackson's brother W.
J.
Clark. He married Mary Vaughn, sister of Martha Vaughn, Andrew's
wife. He is listed in the census as W. J. Clark, on his
gravestone at Macedonia is W. J. Clark. However, Dick's
granddaughter, Era Clark Travis, told Shirley Turner
Clark that
Dick's name was Richard Clark. In the Byrn Funeral Home records
it states William Wyatt's parents are Richard Clark and Mary
Vaughn. Shirley does not know how they got his name as Richard.
She believes W. J., William J., and Richard are all the same
person. Era talked about Andrew being an uncle and knowing Alvin
J. Clark and some of the others, Era also said William Wyatt
Clark had a brother named Jim that lived in Paducah. She may
believe that the name "Dick" was a nickname for Richard. Era
Clark Travis also said Mary Vaughn Clark had some kinfolks at
Sedalia, KY, that she called "cousins". They were Daisy
and Will Barton. Have not found information on them.
