Velma L. Fesler Davis Marrs (1913-2003)
God welcomed Velma to her heavenly home on Feb. 1, 2002, following a short illness. She was the youngest of six children born to John and Martha Fesler on Sept. 14, 1913, in Argenta, IL. The family moved to a farm near Verden, OK, when she was a small child. There, she happily recalls riding to school in a horse and buggy, chopping cotton, and store bought candy on Saturdays. She proudly talked about her dad raising hogs, alfalfa, and cotton and having the cleanest fence rows around. Velma married Cecil Davis on Sept. 6, 1931 in Chickasha, OK. They opened movie theatres in Mountainaire, New Mexico, Cement, OK and the Ritz in Yukon, OK. In 1938, they opened the Coronado Theatre in Warr Acres. Velma was a true partner, taking over the management of the theatre (sometimes running the projectors) while Cecil served with the Army in WWII. He preceded her in death in 1970. In 1974, she married Ruel Marrs and they had many good years together before he preceded her in death. She devoted over 25 years volunteering at Lackey Manor Nursing Home, including organizing and leading a sing-along for the residents. She belonged to Friendly Homemakers Neighbors Group and was a charter member of Shook Memorial United Methodist Church (now New Hope Church). Here, she taught Sunday School for many years and continued spreading sunshine to church members until the day she died. She loved people and spent hours on the phone calling to tell them. Velma was also preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, one brother and a daughter, Sue Ann Salladay. Cecilia Lucetta Davis Yager (1932-2017)
Cecilia Lucetta (Davis) Yager, 84, joined her Heavenly Father, many family members and friends on June 8, 2017. Cecilia was born Nov. 22, 1932, to Cecil and Velma (Fesler) Davis in Chickasha. OK. Just a few weeks old, she traveled with her parents to Mountainaire, NM, where they opened a movie theatre. The following year they moved to Cement, OK, to open another theatre and in 1934 they started the Ritz Theatre in Yukon, OK. So began her love for old movies! While in Yukon she attended the first and second grades; sang at the CCC Thanksgiving dinner; recited a poem at the dedication of the Yukon Post Office and participated in Yukon High School’s football homecoming. The family moved to Warr Acres in 1939 and opened the Coronado Theatre. Cecilia attended Putnam City School 3rd thru 12th grade. She was very active in high school, including being a cheerleader and football queen. In June 1951 she married her high school sweetheart, John Yager, enjoying 65 years of marriage. From this union were born 3 sons, and one daughter. They moved to eastern Canadian County in 1956, and all 4 children attended and graduated from Piedmont High School. They were all very active in sports and Cecilia was one of their most avid fans – not missing a basketball, baseball or softball game. She was a member of Piedmont United Methodist Church, Ruth Circle, United Methodist Women, Mistletoe Mrs. Homemakers Group, Piedmont Historical Society, Red Hat Ladies and Putnam City Alumni Association. Cecilia’s love of Journalism began in high school and she put it to good use working for the Killeen Newspaper, a weekly newspaper near Ft. Hood, TX, where John was stationed with the Army. Later she worked for the Tribune Review in Bethany, OK and the Piedmont-Surrey Gazette in Piedmont, which she and John were part owners. For many years, she also wrote a column about the Piedmont Community in the Yukon Review. She loved people, entertaining, dancing, cook-outs, playing the piano, Christmas, playing with the grandchildren and going to their ballgames. She enjoyed having lunch with friends, craft shows, antique shopping, cooking, playing cards, attending the Lyric Theatre, family get-togethers, OU football and softball games, square dancing, bowling and singing. But her greatest love was her family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sue Ann Kennedy Salladay. Survivors include her husband, sons and daughter; 11 grandchildren, 12 and great-grandchildren.

3. Velma Lucetta Fesler11,12,13, born 14 Sep 1913 in Argenta, Macon Co, IL; died 01 Feb 2002 in Yukon, Canadian Co, OK. She was the daughter of 6. John Madison Fesler and 7. Martha Ellen Scott.

Notes for Cecil Brice Davis(from: Family Histories of Canadian County, Oklahoma - 1987):
CECIL & VELMA DAVIS
Yukon was without a movie theatre when Cecil Davis opened the Ritz in 1934. He was operating a theatre in Cement, Oklahoma prior to the move. After talking with several Yukon merchants, D. B. Phillips, president of the First National Bank, and the film companies in Oklahoma City, he and his wife Velma opened the Ritz on July 6, 1934. Premier movie was "Massacre." The theatre was located on the NW corner of Main and 5th Street. Admission prices were 25¢ for adults and 10¢ for children.
Cecil, Velma and daughter, Cecilia, lived above the theatre. In 1935 another daughter, Sue Ann, was born. Cecil's mother, Essie Davis moved from Chickasha to join the family. Patrons will remember Mrs. Davis sitting in the box office selling tickets. [Essie died in Dec 1971 and is buried at Olive Hill] At the back of the theatre a playground was made for the girls and their cousins, Deanie and Patsy Cook. In the summer these 4 would get so hot from playing, instead of coming upstairs for a drink, they would go 2 doors east to Newkirk's Cafe, and say "drink of ice cold water please." Charlie Newkirk never turned them down.
Cecil Davis was a real showman from keeping the equipment serviced and the sound to perfection to promoting "Old Time Fiddler's Contests," "Shirley Temple Look- alike Contest," and "Candid Camera Pay Night." He gave free theatre passes to the class of Yukon students having the best grade average. Cecil bought a printing press, moved it upstairs and printed handbills, window cards and penny postcards showing the coming attractions for each month. The family addressed and mailed them to the patrons. Also when a special picture was coming, they could ring the phone and the housewives lifted their party-line receivers to hear the good news. Movies were shown nightly, except Sunday, when there was a matinee, always closing for evening church services. Matinees were also on Saturday afternoon. Three local boys operated the projection equipment: Ray Rodriquez, Talmage (Tooter) Nelson and Orville (Spike) Spindle.
The Ritz was even used for Sunday morning worship services. Rev. M. C. Jackson, Christian Church minister, held them for the men "loafing" on Main Street. The movie industry bypassed Yukon for Oklahoma City until the Ritz opened. Then theatre goers from "Piedmont, Okarche, El Reno, Union City and Oklahoma City came to see the very best FIRST RUN pictures. Will Rogers, Shirley Temple and Tarzan movies were big favorites.
The Davis family was active in community and civic affairs. Cecil belonged to the Lion's Club and Civil Air Patrol. Velma helped in the children's department at the Baptist Church. Cecilia was on the dedication program of the new Federal Post Office Building in 1940; she also sang at the CCC Camp Thanksgiving dinner when the family was invited as special guests by Lt. R. F. Thweatt. Sue Ann stole the show when at age 3 she rushed to the front of the church and said Cecilia's Christmas reading. In 1939, Cecil, Velma and Essie Davis opened the Coronado Theatre, 39th and MacArthur. Cecil sold the Ritz in 1943 to L. B. Warren who built a new building. This theatre burned in 1969 and Warren never rebuilt.
Cecil served in the United States Army during World War Ii. Cecil died in Nov. 1970 and is buried in the local community Olive Hill Cemetery.
Velma Davis Marrs still lives in Canadian County with her husband Ruel. She is a charter member of the Shook Memorial Methodist Church, volunteers at Lackey Manor Nursing Home and is a member of Friendly Neighbors Extension Homemakers Group. [Velma died in Feb 2002 and is buried at Olive Hill] Cecilia married John Yager in 1951. They also live in Canadian County and have 4 children: Brice (1953), Jan (1956), Donna (1963) and Todd (1966). They attended Piedmont Schools, where each received "outstanding athletic" awards their senior years. Also 4 grandchildren: Brian (1980) and Richelle (1984), Brice's children: Lacy (1982) and Sean (1984), Jan's children. The Yagers were part owners of the Piedmont-Surrey Gazette Newspaper from 1978-1985. Sue Davis Kennedy [Salladay] lives in Warr Acres. She teaches at Wilson Elementary School in Oklahoma City. She received her Bachelor and Master degrees of Education from Central State University in Edmond. Sue is active at Shook Memorial Methodist Church. [Sue died in Feb 2001 and is buried at Olive Hill]

16. Wilson Davis169,170,171,172, born 09 Dec 1823 in TN; died Abt. 1889 in Sherman Co, TX. He married 17. Elizabeth Aiken 29 Nov 1844 in Monroe Co, TN.

17. Elizabeth Aiken173,174,175,176,177, born 09 May 1820 in TN; died 03 Mar 1894 in TX.

Notes for Wilson Davis:
Hank met Sarah Jane Davis in 1870 in Tennessee, where he was attending East Tennessee Wesleyan University at Athens in McMinn County. Hank’s friend and cousin, Jay Rumburg, was also a student there. Jay married Sarah Jane’s sister, Mary, who became the mother of Martha "Buddy" Rumburg, who figures later in this narrative.
Sally’s and Mary’s parents were Wilson Davis and Elizabeth Aiken (or Eiken). Nothing is known of their forebears.
In 1867 Wilson purchased 200 acres of land in Monroe County for $1350. The following year he sold it for $680, about half the amount he paid for it. Possibly he had never paid the second $680. It must have been about that time he disappeared. His family subsequently trekked to Texas.
One of his granddaughters, Bess Brown Kennedy, daughter of Mattie Davis Brown and Josiah S. Brown, in recording some of her recollections, wrote as follows:
"Grandma Davis and her three boys and four girls come from Tennessee to Texas. Mama, Mattie Ann, was about 6 years old. They come to Grayson County, Texas. One girl Julia died at the age of 16. . . The two older girls married and moved to Virginia. [Sarah Jane and Hank were married in Tennessee.] Mama and papa were married and moved to Montague, Texas . . . Grandma Davis and Uncle Bill Davis bought land joining us on the north, after Papa bought the home place. Grandma Emma Davis and her boys Bill, Austin and Andrew, drove the horses and cows from Tennessee to Grayson County. Uncle Henry had married and moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Grandma Davis husband went on horseback, and took corn to be ground. They found his horse with the corn tied on behind the saddle, but he had disappeared. No one ever knew what had become of him. Grandma drove the horses to the wagon. Mama said they were six or eight weeks coming to Texas."
A June 1955 letter from Bert Davis:
Bert Davis, son of Andrew Davis and grandson of Wilson, enclosed a letter written to him a few days before by Julia Brown Mabry, another daughter of Mattie Davis Brown, in which she speaks of Wilson Davis as follows:
"In regard to Grandpa Davis — mother said that he died December 1890, near Dennison, Texas. Wilson Davis. He lived nearly a year after Grandma died Feb 1889. When I was at your house going to school, Grandpa Davis came one day and he and your mother talked quite awhile. Uncle Andy was gone. They talked on the porch, when he started off Aunt Maggie said ‘That is your Grandpa Davis’ and I ran to the door , watched him go away. He was neatly dressed, straight, and favored Uncle Henry the most, I thought. I think my Mother always wanted to see him. She said to me several times ‘always fight whiskey, whisky ruined our home,’ and I am still fighting it."
We know no more of the forbears of Elizabeth Aiken (Eaken) than we do of the Davis background. Both families could have come from either Virginia or North Carolina. By the 1850's there were many Davises in Tennessee. Elizabeth lived out the rest of her life in Texas, where she died 3 March 1894 and was buried in Hopewell Cemetery, Clay County, TX. The Davis children, besides Sarah Jane and Mary, were Austin, Henry, Andrew, William, Martha Ann, and Julia. Sarah Jane may have remained in Monroe County, possibly living with a relative, until her marriage in 1872. Mary must have gone to Texas with the family, because Jay Rumburg married her in Texas in 1873. What do we know of Sarah Jane? Not much, except that her husband adored her. She was considered pretty, and was no doubt in this respect a big contrast to Hank’s plain sisters. He and his sisters all called her "Sallie." She died of tuberculosis at age 37 when Iva was only five; Viva, the oldest child, was 10; Louin was eight; Riner was four; and Leslie was a baby of one.
