JAMES A. NICHOLSON DEAD
James A. Nicholson was born in North Carolina Oct. 8th 1839; died at Yukon Okla., February 25th 1915, aged 75 years 4 months and 18 days. At the age of twelve he moved with his parents to Hamilton county Indiana. Here he was united in marriage to Caroline Keffler in 1858. Two children were born to this union, Char. Nicholson, of Munhall, Okla., and little Cordia, being taken away when only a child of five years. In his 31st year he was married again to Louise Stephens and to this union six children were born – Cora Skaggs, of Minen, Okla.; George Nicholson, of Britton, Okla.; Will Nicholson, of Britton, Okla.; Mary Wymer, of Marlow, Okla.; Meda Rosecrans, of Blanchard, Okla.; Anna Camp, of Marshall, Okla.; Susan passes away when only an infant. While these children were yet small they were left without a mother. In 1883 he was married to Margaret Shoultz who bore the trials, and shared the joys as well, until he passed away. One child was born to this union—Curtis Nicholson – who resides on the farm near Yukon. Mr. Nicholson was a patriotic citizen, offering his services to his country at the beginning of the war and remaining to the close. He was a volunteer in Company E. Regiment 38, of Indiana. Because of faithfulness he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. He was also a member of the Methodist church in Iowa. As neighbor, friend, husband and father he was faithful and kind, and a worthy citizen who will be missed in this community. He is survived by a wife, eight children, twenty-three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. C. N. Hewitt, at the home, and interment was made in the Carson cemetery. The family have the sympathy of their many friends at this time of sorrow.

James Alexander Nicholson was born October 8, 1839, in Wilkesboro, Wilkes County, North Carolina, the eldest of six children born to William Goforth and Aladelphia Speaks Nicholson. William was possibly the son of James Nicholson (born 1797) who is listed in the 1850 Wilkes County census. In 1850 James Alexander moved with his father's family to Hamilton County, Indiana (near Noblesville).

He married Caroline Keffer on 10 March 1859 at Noblesville. James and Caroline had two children:

On August 16, 1861, James volunteered to serve in the Civil War. He was a 2nd Lieutenant, Company E, 8th Regiment, Indiana Cavalry. He served three years, was wounded in battle and discharged December 9, 1864 at Savannah, Georgia.

James Alexander Nicholson married Louise Stephens on 7 December 1868 at Noblesville. They moved to Wayne County, Iowa in 1869. Louise died 10 November 1882. James and Louise had seven children:

George Nicholson married Laura, the daughter of Lewis and Lucy Rosecrans who are also buried at Olive Hill (lot 46). Their daughter Lola Nicholson Bailey was the first Association Historian and was married to the grandson of Olive Hand Bailey.

James Alexander Nicholson married a widow, Margret Peister Schultz on 14 March 1883 in Wayne County, Iowa. James and Margret had one son, Curtis who is buried nearby.

Margret Peister was born 4 January 1845 in Pike County Iowa. The family moved to Spring Creek Township, Oklahoma Territory in 1891/2. The purchased the quarter acre 7 miles west and one mile north of Britton, Oklahoma, this was the southwest corner of Council Road and Hefner, one mile west of Olive Hill Cemetery (the farm is now a housing development called "Harvest Hills"). The Nicholson children did most of the farming. About 1907, James and Margret moved to Yukon, Oklahoma where they lived out the rest of their lives. Margret died 10 January 1916 at Seymour Iowa on a visit to her son Andrew Schultz.

In 1988, Oleeva Nicholson Albrecht (daughter of George and Laura Rosecrans Nicholson) remembered her grandfather's funeral:

"His funeral was in the home, as many were in those days. They would clear out a room and set the casket in it. Grandpa had on his navy blue army uniform and his long white whiskers were spread out neatly on his chest. His whiskers were always immaculately clean and brushed"

Curtis Nicholson was the oldest person to be buried at Olive Hill. He was born September 14, 1885, in Sewal, Wayne County, Iowa, the youngest of ten children born to James Alexander Nicholson and the youngest child of Margret Peister Schultz Nicholson. He eloped with 15 year old Cassie Estes on November 11, 1903. They were married in Britton, Oklahoma. They had six children.

Curtis then married, May Dixon Lawson, on 30 March 1939. She died in June 1972 and is buried in Bethany Cemetery (Oklahoma).

Tuttle, May 27--Funeral for Mrs. Cora Nickelson Skaggs, 84, will be at 2:30 P.m. Thursday in the First Baptist church here. Mrs. Skaggs died late Tuesday in her home north of here. She had lived in Tuttle since 1913 and had been a resident of Oklahoma since 1902. Mrs. Skaggs was a member of the Baptist church. She is survived by her husband, Owen; two sisters, Mrs. Meda Rosecrans, Vinita; Mrs. Anna DeBow, Perry; a brother Bill Nickelson, Edmond; two half-brothers, Curtis Nickelson, Big Cabin, and James Nickelson, Mulhall, and two grandchildren.
